Practical experience

Mari heads the Urgent Motion Court, Forensic Investigation, Property Management, and Tax Litigation Departments. She also holds the position Secretary of the Board of Directors.

• Advises public entities and other clients on the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (1996), the Public Finance Management Act (1999), Municipal Systems Act (2000), procurement policies and any other applicable legislation.
• Interrogates reviewing, negotiates and drafts contracts (lease agreements, supply agreements, service level agreements, etc.).
• Drafts court processes (action and application proceedings, including heads of argument), and appearances in both High and Magistrates Courts.
• Advises clients on property law and management related aspects, including advising on the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from, and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (1998).
• Advises clients in insolvencies and participates in insolvency inquiries, including advising on the Companies Act (2008) and Insolvency Act (1936).
• Conducts forensic and due diligence investigations, and provides necessary recommendations.
• Advises clients in tax-related matters, including interpretation of the Tax Administration Act (2011) and Value- Added Tax Act (1991) which includes related litigation.
• Assisted entities in determining compliance requirements that impacts the mining industry, in relation to all relevant and associated legislation that may range from issues to do with royalties, securities, guarantees and similar concepts as required by legislation and regulations.
• Assisted clients, primarily SARS, with advisory memorandums on the interpretations of a variety of Tax legislation, and also in disputes that involve tax law.
